Doctors as terrorists?

Over the past several days a failed terrorist attack in Britain has raised anxiety levels regarding another wave of carnage brought to you by nutty extremists. As always there was a paranoia that framed the media coverage, and rampant speculation as to who could be responsible. What I find rather interesting, now that the calm has somewhat returned, and the terrorist cell has been largely apprehended, is that almost all of the terrorists in this instance were Doctors.

Social Media and the 2008 US Presidential Election

I've always loved politics. Since an early age I've been fascinated by all levels, and for that matter all jurisdictions. I suppose this is what fuels my news consumption, and relatedly what attracts me to innovative uses of technology. The upcoming US Presidential election, which is arguably already underway, promises to be quite a battlefield when it comes to the use of technology, explicitly social media, such as facebook, youtube, etc. It was with this in mind that Nancy Wilson and I had a chat about the election, and just how nasty it may turn out to be, thanks to the fog of war the Internet fosters when it comes to campaigns and electioneering.

3D Dialogue: Faith and Politics in the United States

Retired CBC foreign correspondent David Halton has been giving lectures and is writing a book about his experiences, and explicitly his time as the Washington correspondent for CBC News. David was in Washington during the rise of the religious right, and the ascendancy of the born-again Bush White House. It was with this in mind that I interviewed him for my show 3D Dialogue:

Google Accused of Eroding Privacy

Recently Privacy International came out accusing Google of being the greatest threat to privacy due to the fact that their massive Google machine is constantly absorbing and cataloging information. I had a chat with Nancy Wilson about this on CBC News Today:

The Appeal and Implications of the Facebook Phenomenon

I've been doing a number of panels, seminars, and appearances discussing facebook. Here in Toronto and generally in Canada, facebook use has exploded, so much so that the municipal and provincial governments have banned employees of the civil service from using it while at work.

In this panel, host Andrew Nichols interviews Nora Young and myself (Jesse Hirsh) regarding the appeal and general implications of the facebook phenomena.

Blackberry Outage, Amplification, and Bob Dylan

Yesterday started like any other day. I got up early, went out to the Y to workout, then to the grocery store for some food. Just as I was about to checkout I got a call from Joe Solway, a producer at CBC Radio's Metro Morning. He wanted to know if I could go on air in 20 minutes to talk about the outage experienced by Research In Motion that affected all North American Blackberry users. Naturally I obliged, and during the local news segment, Jill Dempsey interviewed me, and to the best of my ability I speculated on what could have happened.

Mobile Devices as Informational Magic Wands

This is an interesting discussion I had with Nancy Wilson regarding the potential for mobile devices to unlock the information that surrounds us in the material world. Or maybe that should be the materialistic world... ;)

The Facebook Phenomenon

Facebook is a social networking platform that has been around for some time, originating in select universities then spreading across all schools and now into society at large. However it has been in the past month that it has rapidly expanded into broader demographics and gobbled up circles of friends from all walks of life. Explicitly I've noticed that as a federal election looms, many of those running have embraced facebook as a means of reaching out to younger voters. I spoke about this, and other aspects that are behind the infectious spread of the facebook meme on CBC News Today with Nancy Wilson:

Internet to be reclassified as broadcast media?

I got a call from David Noble today, regarding a potentially dangerous legal development. I've known David for several years, I greatly admire his critical abilities, I loved his book, The Religion of Technology, and I wish his analysis had greater exposure.

3D Dialogue: Kabbalah

This is an interview I did with Tony Kosinec regarding the study and practice of Kabbalah for my tv show 3D Dialogue. We had a great conversation, and Tony was able to really convey the role of Kabbalah in today's society. What I love about this tv show is our ability to share some of the great wisdom of humanity, with a broad and diverse audience, in a format that fits the medium.
